Breakout room - Technology and Translation. What Tools do Medical Translators use to Enhance Quality and Increase Productivity

Every conversation about technology these days revolves around artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs), however, the most important and useful tools translators use in their everyday work are not related to either of them. In this session, I shall briefly explain the underlying principles of computer-assisted translation (CAT) and quality assurance (QA) tools, as well as how they are used to maintain the level of quality clients expect from a medical translation. A separate section will be dedicated to the advantages and disadvantages of machine translation post-editing, the model favoured especially by the big players in the translation and localisation industry. Last but not least, I shall touch on the use cases of generative AI (GenAI) tools and the privacy and copyright concerns they raise in the translation activity.

• Full (human) translation vs. machine translation post-editing: are we ready to make the shift towards an automation-centric translation model? Is neural machine translation capable of replacing the translation stage in the translation-editing-proofreading (TEP) model?
• The use of GenAI (LLMs) in translation: how to use and how NOT to use the new cool “kids on the block” throughout the translation process
• Privacy and copyright concerns in translation
